 A mermaid in Boracay!
The Philippine Mermaid Swimming Academy (PMSA) is the first of its kind in the world to offer regular Mermaid Lessons! Mermaiding — or swimming with a Monofin tail, is more than just about fulfilling your childhood dream of becoming a mermaid. The water sports activity is based on the diving science of fin swimming, and incorporates basic swimming styles. It strengthens the body’s core and allows you to work out leg muscles. The two-hour introductory lesson is composed of six parts (mermaid introduction and stretching, how to wear and care for the mermaid tail, swimming with the tail and floaters, swimming without floater, swimming practice and drills, and individual assessment). After the necessary introduction, students can learn how to do surface swimming while snorkeling. Upon completing it, the mermaids can do scuba diving! According to Normeth Preglo, one of the founders of PMSA, mermaiding can help non-swimmers to have enough confidence to swim. There’s something magical about putting on a mermaid tail and moving across the water that makes students motivated and feel less afraid of swimming. “We have students who come here and they don’t know how to swim, but with a tail, they can swim well!” She said. The friendly Mermaid Coaches of PMSA are actually certified Rescue Divers with extensive background in conducting swimming lessons.
The academy just started out on November of last year, and it continues to expand on the neighboring islands of Tablas, Dumaguete and Cebu. A Manila based school is also along the way! However, one of the events worth anticipating is the Mermaid Olympics. In this competition, the mermaids can showcase free style tricks with their tails. Aside from being a water sport, Normeth believes that mermaiding is a good way to promote environmental consciousness. She said that the academy engages local communities in preserving the ocean by carrying out awareness raising activities, “because if we don’t have clean oceans, there will be no mermaids”.
When asked about the rewarding part of this sport, she said, “When you swim with a tail, suddenly, you’re part of the ocean.”
PMSA offers daily lessons and courses. Have your first mermaid experience today! Book your lessons today with My Boracay Adventures by calling 036 288 9999 or 09998890042 or 09173948083

What is a vacation without truly being pampered to submission? In a very secluded property of Boracay Island, a haven is perfectly situated. Mandala Spa and Villas is located in Station 3 near Angol Road. It is the more quiet and residential part of Boracay Island. As soon as you arrive, a long trellis entrance welcomes you with serenity until you reach an open lobby that features high structures made of bamboo and other natural materials. You will feel the friendly attention by the staff immediately. The atmosphere is so peaceful and relaxing. The place is definitely a sanctuary for the body and soul.
Mandala Spa’s aim does not only constitute for the guest’s personal wellness and well-being, but they also aim to promote love and compassion to all beings and to the environment. They have won Philippines’ Leading Resort of the Year for three straight years until 2011 by World Travel Awards and hopefully again this year. Their Hilot Trilogy massage has won the Spa Treatment of the Year award in 2009 by Asia Spa Awards. “Hilot” is the ancient Filipino healing massage which means to give therapeutic benefits for the mind, body and spirit. One form in this trilogy is the Bentosa technique which is a traditional vacuum cupping on areas at the back or other affected areas to effectively give balance of the body’s heat and energy flow.
They also offer Shodhana Karma. It is an ancient Indian healing system of natural care, which is called the “Ayurveda.” The three part ritual promises healing and rejuvenation by removing environmental toxins from the body. Watsu is another one of their special treatments, where the body is subjected to a deep state of relaxation on a heated pool. The gentle rocking movements on the relaxed body nurtures with gentleness as with a child releasing emotional blockages as one would completely surrender to the entrancing experience of unconditional love. This is perfect for the very young, adolescent, elderly, pregnant women, athletes, those suffering extreme form of stress, and beneficial for those with orthopedic conditions.
For the environment, Mandala Spa and Villas is dedicated to give back. They have started the Treetment Project in 2009. This is a commitment they made to plant and care of a tree for each treatment a guest would get. And as part of their giving back, they have planted 1,000 seedlings on September of that same year in protected areas of Boracay Island and some parts of the mainland in Aklan. Guests have the option to name their tree and will be updated of its growth and development. This project was also made possible with the cooperation of the local government and the DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources). The Treement Project is part of the eco-friendly practices that Mandala Spa and Villas upholds to.
I highly recommend that you try this experience at least once while you are here in Boracay Island. And their nice sarong is one of the most coveted souvenirs in the island by recurring guests and locals! Between getting yourself recovering after partying in the island or just to relax, you are also saving the environment one treatment at a time. It is a win-win situation, you can’t go wrong!

Boracay Implements Stricter Penalties Against Sand Thieves
Gmanetwork.com, August 29, 2012
It is very tempting to take home some amount of Boracay Island’s powdery white sand as souvenir, but think twice before doing so. On August 22 report from the Philippine Information Agency, authorities of Malay, Aklan have recently amended Municipal Ordinance 310, which bans people from collecting white sand and pebbles from the island’s beaches and imposes stricter penalties on those who have been caught doing so.
As now stipulated under the amendments, first-time offenders will be fined Php 2,500 or imprisonment for one to three months, or both depending on the court decision. Subsequent offenders will be penalized with three to six months imprisonment. Also, under the ordinance, presidents, managers, administrators, owners or proprietors of business establishments caught in violation of the ordinance will be fined Php 2,500 and/or be imprisoned for one to six months. Their business permits may also be revoked. It also stipulates that offenders are required to return extracted white sand and pebbles to the beaches where they were taken from.
Thieving tourists who steals are known elsewhere in the world. Some steals cobblestones and mosaic pieces from ancient Roman sites, bricks from the Great Wall of China, and a fairy penguin from an Australian marine park.

Boracay Beats Ibiza in Top Party Beaches List
Abs-cbnnews.com, September 4, 2012
Boracay Island keeps nabbing top awards recently. The island continues to be recognized internationally, as it beats Ibiza, Spain and South Beach in Miami in a list of top party beaches. The Hufftington Past featured online travel advisor Cheapflights.com’s list of “Top 10 party beaches around the world. The visitors of the site ranked the destinations on a scale of one to five stars, with five being the highest.
As of Tuesday, August 28, Boracay Island ranked third, getting an average of five stars while Ibiza and South Beach has ranked seventh and eighth places respectively.
Topping the list is Psarou Beach in Mykonos Island in Greece, which was described as a “pretty well-kept secret.” Not so anymore after this list has got out.
Quoting Cheapflight.com’s description of Boracay’s White Beach: “This beach at Boracay used to be so notorious for wild behavior that its visitors were sworn to secrecy – to keep this gem a private pleasure. Word got out eventually (of course), but the party scene hasn’t been dialed back a single bit. When night falls, this incredible beach comes to life. There are amazing fire dance shows and fireworks, live bands and parties that last from dusk until dawn. There’s a great variety of clubs and bars along the beach, so no matter what kind of music you’re interested in, you’ll find a great place to hang out where the dance floor is never empty.”
Other famous beaches that made it to the list are Zrce Beach in Croatia, Palolem Beach in India, Haad Rin Beach in Thailand, Nissi Beach in Cyprus, Gordon Beach in Israel and Kuta Beach in Indonesia.

A little advance planning definitely helps you make the most of your time and money in Boracay Island. Research about the places you want to see and activities you want to do. Do read reviews, but do not dwell in them too much as your expectations might be set too high. Our website has a lot of good suggestions and is well worth it to check out. Do not overdo your itinerary and just leave yourself just rummaging through a crowded traffic of tourists or your basic inability to relax leaving you only with 5 hours of sleep each night. Make a back-up itinerary in case the one you have is not working out for you. Most importantly, learn how to say no to extra load from work while you are away. It is your vacation and you must enjoy it without having to be stressed out for the same reason you are on holidays to un-stress yourself.
It is also best to spend more time exploring fewer destinations, thereby creating a more intimate travel experience. The good thing is that despite all of its variety, Boracay Island is a tiny place and it’s relatively easy to explore within half a day or less. You can easily enjoy all of the island’s main fields of interest: beach, jungle or land activities and hopping to other islands in a week.
Hire a guide. The idea that hiring a guide is for amateur tourists is really a misconception. Hiring a guide could be the best move you make. Especially it’s a good idea if you are going to be in a place for a short period of time. Be always polite, an aggravation due to an ugly exchange brought about by a little misunderstanding will totally fall under how to ruin your vacation.
Only over the Christmas-New Year’s, Chinese New Year’s and Easter holiday periods might you face any difficulties in finding a room, but it still pays to book ahead for any particular places you’re keen to stay in, and make inquiries about the necessity of booking for any activities, such as diving and dive courses. Boracay Island is budget travelers’ paradise and there are accommodations for every range.
The best months to visit Boracay Island are the drier ones: November through June, the Amihan season. The rainy season, which is the Habagat Season (July to October) isn’t so wet that you can’t do anything fun. However, there would be sporadic days in a week in the Habagat Season that it just rains heavily. The biggest tourist influx is in the couple of weeks each side of Christmas and Easter.
Many accommodations, especially the more expensive ones have high and low-season prices. Please check the season specified on each hotel’s Rooms and Prices page when you book. There is also an ‘extra’ season referred to as Super Peak which is covering the Christmas, New Year’s, Chinese New Year’s and Easter periods, when prices go above normal high-season rates. If you’re using top-end or some mid-range accommodations, you’ll certainly save money by avoiding these seasons. See our hotel quick finder to see more about range in accommodations.
Though a poor country, Philippines is at least as expensive as any other South East Asian countries, a tad costly than in Thailand. High taxes, many imports and the fact that much of its tourism industry is geared to Europeans on fairly short vacations help keep the prices high. For US $70 to US $150 will buy you a solidly comfortable midrange double all throughout the island. For anything above the ordinary you’re often looking at a minimum of US $200, and the top end of the market goes above US $350.
A good two- or three-course meal with a couple of drinks in a pleasant restaurant will average US $75 to US $150 (more if you eat lobster!). Furthermore, there are a lot of local cuisines that are worth the adventure at a considerable price. Budget travelers can make their money last longer by hanging out in places as described in our local chill-out spots blogs. The Happy Hour within the island is definitely something to look forward to. There is also a list of liquor stores around that offers so many choices that you can bring around the island. Just look for the signs where they are not allowed to be brought in.
Traveling by trike is cheap, but car hire, taxis, boats and hotel transfers are not. Tours and excursions mostly run from $50 to $150 per person for a day (more for diving trips). Check our activities page for detailed information.
Overall, a comfortable midrange budget per person is US $400 to US $500 per day. Staying in some of the better accommodations, enjoying plenty of tours and activities, and traveling by rented car or hotel can easily add up to US $700 a day could be more. Budget travelers might get away with US $100 a day if they’re particularly frugal, but you need to spend more like US $200 to US $300 to enjoy yourself. The simplest way to cut costs is to share rooms, transport and tours with other people.
Philippine currency is the Peso (Php), which was hovered at or around a rate of Php 43 = US $1 for several years, prices in our website is converted with the current exchange each day. The accommodation prices on our website do not have any other additional rates, what you see is what you get. However, you might find in restaurants will have additional service charges, so do watch out for signs or ask accordingly.

September 10th, 2012
On November 3, 2012, Saturday at 9AM, a festival will commence to celebrate the change of the season, the shift of the winds that embrace Boracay Island every year. Right now, we are still on the Habagat season and it will change to Amihan season soon even before November. Habagat is that onshore wind that brings heavy rains and creates deep erosion on White Beach only to bring the powdery white sand back again when Amihan comes. Amihan is the idyllic time to enjoy the shore of White Beach. It is where offshore wind creates longer days covering it with blue skies and fluffy white clouds. The wind plays an important role in daily Filipino life and it is the soul and rhythm of the islands. The indigenous culture of Boracay Island has celebrated the change of the season as it marks the passing of time and where it brings abundance of different types of marine life that will be present in the shores during this time. Amihan also marks the time of harvest and planting anew.
The festival will unite the two elements of nature, the wind and water. “Bulong ng Hangin” means the whisper of the winds, a beck and call for hope and grace. This festival is also a celebration for change and appreciation to nature that never cease on giving. What better way to give back to this beautiful wonder, Boracay Island by joining in the fun and festivities. Everybody is welcome to participate on these events. If you will be around the island at that time, don’t hesitate to look it up and it will be all around the billboards and local papers.
These are following activities that will commence:
- Lifeguard Competition
- Kiteboarding Competition
- Paraw Regatta
- Ocean Swim and Adventure Run
- Children’s Kite Flying Competition
- Beach Clean Up
Get your training on if you are interested to join on the more sporty activities, or design and start making that kite for your young ones already and most of all, get your enthusiasm up for the cleaning of the beach. This event is foreseen to happen annually. The Festival of the Winds promises tons of fun for the whole family. It will be the best way to spend your family day. The exciting competitions will feature Boracay Island’s best and very fit athletes. Hope to see you there!

Bei Kurt und Magz Snackbar (refer to our Guidebook Map 4, C4) Located in Angol, Station 3 beside Arwana Resort, Beit Kurt und Magz is a German restaurant. It is a quaint place and has a friendly environment. You will definitely feel at home while you are here. Kite surfers and locals hangout in this snackbar. Bei Kurt und Magz is also a home base for Freestyle Academy Kite School during Habagat season. There is a huge library of books that you can borrow from to read by the beach. Enjoy an authentic German food with your cocktail while watching the colorful kites go up and fly away until sunset. They also serve Filipino food.
Exit Bar (refer to our Guidebook Map 2, F4) Located next door to Red Coconut on the famous White Beach is one of the true local bars in the island. It is the prime destination of most locals before hitting the clubs in the beach. You will see a lot ex-pats come around here, too. It has a billiard table and a tattoo shop at the back. It is a very down-to-earth bar and different types of music are played every night. Sometimes they have live bands to play on Friday nights. There is no food served here, so you can bring your snacks in if you want or order next door at Bombom Bar and try their Sizzling Crocodile Sisig (grilled and minced crocodile meat with hot spices).
Café del Mar (refer to our Guidebook Map 2, E4) Located on White Beach, Café del Mar is one of the few places that offer really good margaritas and daiquiris. A lot of locals come here for sunset then stay for dinner time at the nice set-up near the bar. They offer Mediterranean cuisine and other international dishes. Their specialties are Smoked Tanigue on toast, Foursome Dips, Crosstini Platter, Grilled Mahi-mahi, Chili Crab and Broiled Fish Fillet Morocan. The experience is definitely fine dining at a reasonable price. A favorite side dish is their Fried Calamares.
Levantin (refer to our Guidebook Map 5, F4) Located at the opposite side of the island in Bulabog Beach. This bar caters to a lot of locals, divers and kite-surfers. It is home to sunrise lovers. Sunrise on Bulabog Beach is equally spectacular as the sunset on White Beach. They serve Romanian Buffet dinners every Thursday nights and it is a must-try experience while in Boracay Island. This is the regular stop for locals prior to ascending to the Full Moon Party at Area 51, the old Jungle Bar located at the other end of Bulabog Beach.

Tiger Air Completes Purchase of 40% Stake in SEAir
Rappler.com, August 14, 2012
Singapore Airlines’ budget arm Tiger Air announced a completion of its acquisition to the maximum allowed foreign stake on local carrier South East Asian Inc. (SEAir), the 5th largest play in the industry of 6 from 32.5% to 40%. Tiger told Singapore Stock Exchange that the recent purchase amounts to USD $7 Million.
In a statement on Tuesday, August 14, the investment will be handled through Tiger’s wholly-owned subsidiary Roar Aviation II Pte. Ltd., while the remaining 60% is owned by Filipino shareholders.
“This deal represents a significant step forward to SEAir and will allow the airline to continue its tremendous growth and job-creation drive for Filipinos, bringing increased prosperity, highly-skilled jobs, and tourism to the country,” said the newly-appointed SEAir Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Tan.
“Together with our Philippine business partners, our immediate focus will be on scaling up our business through network expansion, building a strong customer base, and establishing the brand presence of SEAir. The Philippines has tremendous growth potential and we welcome the opportunity to be at the heart of it,” said Tiger Group Chief Executive Officer, Koay Peng Yen.
SEAir has been carrying Tiger-branded flights on international routes. It will be adopting the Tiger business model which includes offering value fares for domestic and international destinations within a 5-hour flying radius of Manila and Clark, its current hubs.
In July and August 2012, SEAIR launched flights from the Domestic Terminal, also known as Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 4, to 7 domestic destinations – Cebu, Davao, Tacloban, Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, Kalibo (Boracay), and Bacolod.
SEAir also operates flights from Clark International Airport in Pampanga, to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kota Kinabalu, Singapore, and Kalibo (Boracay).
The flights bound for the tourist haven of Boracay Island accounting for bulk of the traffic. Plans include beefing up SEAir’s current fleet of two A319s and three A320s with new airlines.
